Why it matters
Marathwada is one of Maharashtra's poorer regions and has long been the part of the state furthest from a good road. This link puts it on the expressway network.
History
This expressway is a branch off the Samruddhi Mahamarg. The main Mumbai–Nagpur expressway passes through Jalna, and this link runs south-east from there through Parbhani to Nanded, bringing the Marathwada districts onto the same fast road. Nanded is a major pilgrimage city — the Hazur Sahib gurdwara draws visitors from across the country — and the link cuts hours off the drive from Mumbai.
