Why it matters
This is the road that finally let traffic cross Patna quickly. Before it, everything moving between the western suburbs and old Patna City had to squeeze along Ashok Rajpath past hospitals, colleges and markets. The Ganga Path also opened up the riverfront itself — a stretch of the city most people never used to see — and it is the first piece of a longer riverside corridor Bihar wants to extend further west from Digha and further east from Didarganj.
History
The Loknayak Ganga Path, better known as the JP Ganga Path, is a riverfront expressway that runs along the Ganga in Patna, from Digha in the west to Didarganj in the east. Patna had grown as a long, thin city squeezed between the river and the railway, and its one main east–west street, Ashok Rajpath, was jammed for most of the day. The state government's answer was to build a brand-new road on the riverbank itself, much of it standing on concrete stilts so that the Ganga's floodwater can still spread underneath. Work started after the foundation stone was laid in 2013, and the road opened piece by piece — first to PMCH in 2022, then to Gaighat, then to Kangan Ghat, and finally all the way to Didarganj on 10 April 2025. The finished 20.5 km road cost about ₹3,831 crore and gave Patna its first fast, signal-light-free crossing of the city. Because of the long open views over the water, people quickly nicknamed it the Marine Drive of Patna.

Engineering highlights
- Riverbank stilt viaduct — about 14 km of the road is carried on pillars along the Ganga's edge, so the river can still flood the bank below without damaging it; the remaining 6.5 km runs at ground level
- Krishna Ghat link road — a spur that drops from the expressway down into the Gandhi Maidan area
On the road
End to end takes about 20–25 minutes, against an hour or more on the old city roads. It is busiest during morning and evening office hours near the Gandhi Maidan and PMCH ramps. Evenings are popular with people who drive out just for the view of the river. Thick fog in December and January can slow things down, and the ghat-side ramps get crowded during big river festivals such as Chhath.
