History
Madurai's ring road runs around the western and southern side of the city, from Tirumangalam up past Viraganur, carrying highway traffic clear of the streets around the Meenakshi Amman temple. The old city is laid out in concentric squares around that temple, and its lanes fill with pilgrims and market traffic — no highway could sensibly pass through it.
