Why it matters
More long-distance road freight passes Nagpur than almost anywhere else in India, because the country's main north–south and east–west highways cross here. The ring is what stops all of it entering the city.
History
Nagpur sits at the geographical centre of India, and the two great national highways — the north–south NH 44 and the east–west NH 53 — cross there. The Outer Ring Road was built so that the traffic on them, much of it long-distance freight, could pass round the city instead of meeting in the middle of it. It also serves the logistics hub and cargo airport built on the city's southern edge.
