Why it matters
Northern Karnataka has long been the part of the state furthest from any expressway. This road gives its farming and quarrying districts a direct route east towards Hyderabad and west towards the coast.
History
This is a new road being cut across northern Karnataka, from Belagavi near the Maharashtra border east through Bagalkot district and Ilkal to Raichur on the Telangana side. Northern Karnataka is dry, thinly served farming country, and until now getting across it has meant a slow run on state highways through every town on the way. The greenfield alignment skirts them all.

- It passes near Badami and Aihole, the rock-cut temple sites of the Chalukya kings.
