NH 26 runs 555 km from Bargarh, Odisha to Rajapulova (near Vizianagaram), Andhra Pradesh.

Why it matters
NH 26 is the main road out of western and southern Odisha's hill districts toward the coast and the port city of Visakhapatnam. It carries rice from the Balangir plains, bauxite and aluminium from Koraput, and forest produce from the tribal highlands. Just as important, it is the road that connects thinly-served districts to the hospitals, colleges and markets of the coastal plain.
History
NH 26 links the farming plains of western Odisha with the coastal belt of Andhra Pradesh. From Bargarh it runs south through Balangir, Bhawanipatna and the tribal districts of Nabarangpur and Koraput, then climbs over the Eastern Ghats to come down near Vizianagaram. It was created in the 2010 renumbering, mainly from the old NH 201 and the northern part of the old NH 43. The northern half crosses the dry Kalahandi–Balangir farm belt, while the southern half winds through forested highlands that hold some of India's biggest bauxite deposits. For most of its length it is the only national highway serving districts that were, for a long time, among the hardest places in India to reach by road.

On the road
The full run takes roughly 12–14 hours, and most drivers split it at Bhawanipatna or Jeypore. The ghat stretch between Koraput and Salur is beautiful but slow, with hairpin bends, mist and heavy truck traffic — cover it in daylight. The monsoon from June to September brings landslips and poor visibility in the hills, so October to February is the best season. Fuel and food stops are spaced far apart between Bhawanipatna and Nabarangpur.
