Why it matters
Coastal Karnataka and the interior are separated by the Ghats, and there are only a handful of roads across. This is one of them, and it gives the Malnad districts a direct route to both the coast and Bengaluru's eastern satellite towns.
History
National Highway 69 crosses the peninsula from the Karnataka coast at Honnavar, climbs the Western Ghats past Sagara and Jog Falls to Shivamogga, then runs east across the Deccan through Sira and Chintamani into Andhra Pradesh at Chittoor. It is one of the few direct east–west roads across southern Karnataka, and it links the coast to the dry interior.

On the road
The ghat section near Sagara is winding and slow, and lovely in the monsoon. The eastern half is open, dry and fast.
