Why it matters
Prayagraj sits on the busiest freight route in northern India and hosts the largest religious gathering in the world. The bypass is what allows both to happen at once.
History
The Prayagraj Bypass carries the Grand Trunk Road traffic around the south of the city instead of through it. It was built as part of the Golden Quadrilateral programme so that the constant stream of trucks between Delhi and Kolkata would stop crossing a city that fills with millions of pilgrims at every Magh Mela and Kumbh Mela.
