Navi Mumbai was built as a planned overflow city for Mumbai, and this highway is its spine. It is also the funnel through which almost all road traffic leaves Mumbai to the south and east.
History
The Sion–Panvel Highway is the road that made Navi Mumbai possible. It runs from Sion, at the northern edge of Mumbai island, across the creek and through Vashi, Nerul, Belapur and Kalamboli to Panvel, and it has been widened repeatedly — most recently to eight and ten lanes — as the satellite city along it filled up. It is also the road every vehicle takes between Mumbai and Pune, Goa or the Konkan, so its traffic is a mix of daily commuters and long-distance freight.
