Why it matters
Varanasi receives millions of pilgrims a year in a street plan that predates motor traffic entirely. The ring road is what lets national highway freight pass by without adding to that.
History
Varanasi is one of the oldest continuously lived-in cities in the world, and its streets were never built for through traffic. The Ring Road was built by the national highways authority to carry the Grand Trunk Road and the highways from Gorakhpur, Prayagraj and Chandauli around the city instead of into it, crossing the Ganga and the Varuna on new bridges. It also gives pilgrims and visitors a quicker route between the airport and the ghats.
