Why it matters
Chennai is a port city with three national highways converging on it. This ring is what keeps their freight out of the city's streets, and it has pulled a great deal of warehousing and industry out to the suburbs it passes.
History
The Chennai Outer Ring Road runs in a long arc through the outer suburbs from Minjur in the north, past Avadi and Kundrathur, to Vandalur in the south. It was built by the state's road development company so that freight moving between the highways to Kolkata, Bengaluru and Tiruchirappalli, and the traffic to and from Chennai's ports, would not have to enter the city. It is a fully grade-separated road with service roads on both sides, and the land alongside it has been reserved for a future rail corridor.
