Why it matters
Rajasthan's traffic mostly runs east–west along the Delhi–Jaipur–Ahmedabad axis. This is the road that runs the other way, tying the desert districts of Nagaur and Shekhawati to Ajmer, Udaipur and northern Gujarat.
History
National Highway 58 runs the length of Rajasthan from the Shekhawati country in the north-east, through Nagaur, Merta and Ajmer, then down the eastern flank of the Aravallis past Rajsamand and Udaipur into Gujarat at Palanpur. It is one of the state's main north–south roads and it links a string of places people travel a long way to see — the Ajmer dargah, the marble country around Rajsamand, and the lakes of Udaipur. Note that the old NH 58 was the Delhi–Haridwar–Badrinath road; this number was reassigned in the 2010 renumbering.
Good to know
- Runs almost the full height of Rajasthan, from Shekhawati to the Gujarat border.
- Serves Ajmer, whose dargah of Moinuddin Chishti draws pilgrims from across South Asia.
- Rajsamand, on the route, is the centre of India's marble quarrying.
- The old NH 58 was the Delhi–Badrinath road — an entirely different route. The number was reassigned in 2010.
- It follows the eastern edge of the Aravalli range for much of its length.
On the road
Long, mostly open driving. Ajmer is heavily congested, especially during Urs. Marble lorries are frequent around Rajsamand and Kishangarh.
